3 Key Lessons for Effective Storytelling

I was working with the ARA VisCom third year students, advising them of their final project. Over that time I noticed three basic insights that keep coming up when reviewing their work.

I thought I’d share these insights that are key in producing effective work.

1. Keep It Simple

If you can’t explain your idea in a tweet (or, these days, a post on X), it’s too complicated. It forces you to zero in on the core message, making it easier for others to understand and engage. It also helps inform all the other communication you produce, making sure everything points back to one clear, simple idea.

2. Stand Out

In a world full of noise, you’ve got to be different to be noticed. Whether it’s your tone of voice or your visual style, find that unique angle that sets you apart and catches people’s attention.

3. Be Positive

Your work reflects you. Just as people are drawn to brands with positive messages, the same goes for individuals. People make decisions based on emotions. When you look at your work, ask yourself, “How does this make me feel?” If the answer is good, you’re on the right track. If not, explore alternatives.

These principles aren’t just for students – they’re for anyone aiming to make an impact. Keep it simple, stand out, and be positive. It’s a formula that’s worked for me, and one I know can work for you too.
